Privacy Policy

Effective Date: October 10, 2025

This Privacy Policy explains how Contextly ("we", "our", or "us") collects, uses, stores, and safeguards information when you use the Contextly Chrome Extension ("the Extension").

1. Information We Collect

When you use the Extension, we may collect the following information:

  • Email address (only if the user creates an account or logs in)
  • User interactions with the Extension, including:
    • Questions submitted to the chatbot
    • AI-generated responses returned to the user

The Extension does not collect any additional information beyond what's necessary for its operation. This data is collected only to provide the service, maintain a user history, and support essential functionality. We do not collect or store any other personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, IP addresses, or browser fingerprints.

2. How We Use Collected Data

We use the collected data solely for the following purposes:

  • To generate chatbot responses via AI models
  • To provide users with an accessible history of their past interactions
  • To monitor usage in order to calculate consumption and tool usage
  • To maintain core functionality of the Extension

We do not use this data for marketing, advertising, or profiling purposes.

3. Data Storage and Retention

User data (email, interactions, history) is securely stored in Supabase. Data is retained for a maximum of 1 month. After this period, it is automatically deleted. Storage is implemented exclusively to allow users to recover their interaction history and to calculate usage.

4. Permissions requested

The extension enables the user to crop a visible portion of the video in the active tab (for example when watching a YouTube video), only after clicking the “Crop” button.

  • host_permissions <all_urls>: this broad host permission is required so the extension can access the content of the active tab on demand, regardless of the exact URL or video context (e.g., YouTube mobile, playlist, embed).

Reason: While the feature is limited to the video player, the page URL may vary significantly (playlists, embeds, mobile versions, redirections). To ensure consistent functionality across those variations, an all-URL pattern is used.

What we do not do:

  • We do not capture any webpage content beyond what you explicitly select.
  • We do not automatically send or collect data from your pages.
  • We do not monitor or act on pages where you have not clicked the “Crop” button.

5. Data Sharing with Third Parties

User email and interaction history are never shared with any third parties. Only the questions submitted by users, in anonymous form, are sent to external AI services (e.g., Google Gemini or OpenAI) for processing and response generation. We do not sell, share, or disclose data for advertising or commercial purposes.

6. Data Security

The Extension is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect or process personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us so we can delete it.

7. Children’s Privacy

The Extension is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect or process personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us so we can delete it.

8. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as our features or legal obligations evolve. Updates will be posted on this page with a revised “Effective Date.” We encourage users to review this policy periodically.
